Packing for College...The Kitchen

When it comes time to go to college, the hardest part for most is leaving home.  However, deciding what to pack is difficult as well.  Of course, you don’t want to pack all of your things but you also want to make sure you pack everything you need.  The focus of this post will be on necessary kitchen items.

Unless you plan to cook your own meals, you don’t need to bring your entire kitchen with you.  But
having certain kitchen items on hand will be of use when you do decide to cook the occasional meal for yourself.  To start off, you will need the obvious essentials which are plates, bowls, cups, and plastic silverware.  If you plan to cook often, it may be a good idea to invest in real silverware but that depends on your needs and preference.  Mugs are also necessary, especially if you enjoy drinking coffee or tea.  Even if you don’t enjoy either of those beverages, come winter a mug will come in handy for drinking hot cocoa or apple cider.

Some other kitchen must-haves that should appear on your packing list are a water bottle, brita pitcher, dish soap, and kitchen towel.  The water bottle you bring with you should be durable enough to carry around campus with you in order to stay hydrated.  Although many people may not consider it, a brita pitcher will come in handy for filtering water.  It will eliminate the cost of buying bottled water as well.  Some college dorms may already have filtered water fountains
but not all.

If you plan on cooking your own food regularly, it is important to
consider getting other kitchen items such as baking dishes, mixing bowls, baking sheet, pots and pans or anything else you may require.  However, the items mentioned above should suffice for the typical college student (other than snacks of course but we will talk about that later this summer).
