College Jobs, the Truth Revealed

You’ve made it to college!  Since starting college you’ve discovered that there are a lot of different activities to juggle around in your schedule including classes, homework, clubs, LEAD events, and other extracurricular activities, and of course your own free time.  But you might have to add one more activity to that list: a job!

It’s no secret that college is expensive these days.  Because it is so expensive, few people can get away without working a job throughout college and/or going into debt.  Naturally, this makes your schedule a little tougher to handle.  Many people, if they qualify, do work study.  Others, like me, find a job.

For some people like me, finding a job might be difficult.  I don’t own a car or have any other consistent and reliable mode of transportation.  Lucky for me, I live on a campus where there are abundant opportunities to work on-campus.  So, let me inform you what kind of jobs are available on-campus.

1.       Community Advisor (CA) (Sometimes called a RA)

A CA is responsible for making sure everyone follows rules in the dorm.  But they do more than that.  They can help with roommate issues, or even suitemate issues.  When it’s time to leave for breaks, they make everyone knows what needs to be done before they leave.  Most important of all, they can be a reliable person to talk to if you are having any issues being away from home.

2.       University Ambassador (UA)

I can’t speak for other universities, however, when I first toured the William Woods campus the tour was led by two students.  I thought this was really cool, what better way to learn about the campus?  Thus, being a UA involves giving tours to potential students.

3.       Work-study

Work-study itself is not a job.  Students who qualify for work-study can choose from a multitude of jobs.  Such jobs include working in the library, the mailroom, being a tutor, or working as one of the faculty member’s assistant. Work-Study is like a scholarship you receive to work on campus because of your income level.

4.       Lock-up and feed crew

These are two jobs unique to William Woods because they involve working in the barns.  Feed crew is responsible for feeding the horses on-campus in the evening.  It is typically a crew of 5-8 people.  Lock-up crew is made up of two people who walk through the barns to turn out lights, lock doors, and ensure the horses are doing well.
