Packing for College...Clothes

For the next post in the packing for college series I will be discussing clothes. Before I start I have three warnings. First, William Woods is in Missouri which means we get all kinds of weather but nothing too extreme. We get snow but hardly ever get snowed in, we get rain, but not as much as if we lived on the coast, we have heat but it barely gets above 100 and never while school is in session. I say all this to inform you that this list has clothing items for all kinds of weather; however, if you are going to school somewhere else you may not need all these items.

When packing your clothes keep in mind the weather of the place you are going. My second warning is this; this list is what I brought to college for my style. I like to get ‘dressed up’ (jeans and a top, or maybe a cute sundress) for class. Aly, on the other hand, wears sweatpants or athletic shorts and a t-shirt everyday; rain, or shine, heat or snow. What you pack for college should reflect how you plan to dress. Do you plan to go out for a sorority? Make sure you pack nice clothes for recruitment and pin day. Are you an athlete? Make sure you pack your sport’s attire. Are you able to drive to a beach from your school? Pack a swimsuit. Are you going to church on Sunday? Pack church clothes.  Do you plan on using your school’s free gym? Pack workout clothes. My last warning: YOU HAVE LIMITED SPACE!!) All that being said here is a suggested list of clothing items to pack for college.

Tops

·         Tank tops (great for layering)

·         T-shirts (keep in mind you will be getting some of these from events on campus)

·         Long Sleeve t-shirts

·         Sweaters (perfect for chilly fall days)

·         Tops (for pin clothes, church, or that random event you need to dress up for)

·         Cardigans (perfect for layering when one classroom is cold and the other is hot)

·         Hoodies (the casual version of the cardigan only 200% more comfy)

·         Light jacket (when the only chill is the breeze)

·         Jean Jacket (bringing back ‘Boy Meets World’ people)

·         Rain Jacket (you don’t want to get wet!)

·         Heavy Jacket (when it’s not quite coat weather yet)

·         Coat (when you wake up to 5 in of snow but still have to go to class)

Bottoms

·         Jeans (a college girl’s staple)

·         Shorts (athletic, jean, cargo, etc.)

·         Skirts (for that date or for church)

·         Sweatpants (you need something to wear to that movie night!)

·         Leggings (workout leggings, black leggings, whatever you choose )

o   I personally bought 2 pairs of fleece lined leggings before going to school and used them ALL the time when it was cold outside

Other Clothing Items

·         Casual dress (or two) (sundress, Maxi dress)

·         PJ’s (you need to wear SOMETHING to bed)

·         Socks (bring more than you think you need

·         Underwear (bring enough for 2-3 weeks in case you can get laundry done)

·         Bras (same as underwear)

·         Swimsuit (I never used mine but it all depends on you)

·         Workout clothes (only pack this if you know you will use them, otherwise they just take up precious space)

·         Simi-formal dress (bring just one just in case ) (especially if you are going Greek)

Shoes

·         Flip Flops (perfect for that late night fire drill)

·         Sandals (to dress up that outfit)

·         Flats (perfect for looking dressed up without walking across campus in heels)

·         Tennis shoes (I promise you will use them for something)

·         Rain boots (Oh look, it’s now raining)

·         Winter boots (Keep those toes warm)

·         ‘Riding’ boots (Be that ‘typical white girl’ inside you)

·         Slippers (again, late night movie anyone?)

·         Heels (just don’t wear them to class…….please)

·         Any shoes you wear on a regular basis

·         I brought my dance shoes too because I am on dance team so any special shoes you need for any activities you are going to be a part of (*clears throat* EQS riders)

Other Items

·         Belts

·         Gloves

·         Jewelry

·         Purses

·         Scarves (both fashion and cold weather)

·         Watch (I had a class with no clock and we weren’t allowed to have a phone out)

·         Hats

College is the time to reinvent your style. If you feel comfortable with your High School style still good for you! BUT, remember, no one at college knows you, if you want to change the way you dress you can do that now.

Again, this is a general guideline, what you pack should reflect your style and how you dress.
