Going into college one piece of advice you will hear over
and over is, ‘get involved on campus,’ ‘find a club to join’ or something of
the like. We all heard it a million times and it seemed to lose its meaning.
Then you get to college and you see posters and flyers and emails from all
these groups wanting members. And even though it was getting redundant every
one of us (with the exception of Aly) joined at least two clubs on campus. And
we saw what everyone was raving about! Because of these clubs you can sometimes
feel overwhelmed by the amount of tasks and events you have to do for the day.
However, you meet so many people, and there are so many new experiences come
from your clubs; because of this even we have even given you this advice here!
My favorite club I have joined this year is Dance Team! It
is a new club on campus this year and it didn’t even get started until end of
September early October. I wouldn’t have known about it except for the flyers
mentioned above.
We started out pretty large as people tried it out and
decided if it was for them or not but in a month or two we had a team of 9
girls who loved to dance and just wanted to continue doing what they love.
Our faculty sponsor is Kylie she works in the Admissions
office on campus and has become our Dance Mom here. We love her to death and
she is so super proud of us as a team.
Our Captain is Jill she is a Jr here, and she is the one
who started everything with her passion to get back into dancing. She is super
funny but helps us become better dancers in the process. Paige is our
co-Capitan and main choreographer. She is a freshman who was on her HS Dance
Team and still has all of that fresh in her brain. She is sarcastic in the best
possible way and loves to talk. But she knows when to get down to business to
get ready to perform.
The rest of the girls are great too! There is Kala, a
first year senior with the curliest red hair and biggest smile; Kassi, the
vegetarian in a very serious relationship; Lorelei, the freshman from Chicago
who loves to talk about everything; and Rebecca, whom we call Becs our newest
member who we are trying to break the HS cheerleader out of. Then there are the
three musketeers, Camille, the shortest of the bunch who can whip out some mean
dances to K-pop; Emily, our in house clogger who is always prepared for
anything; and me, the ballerina and most flexible of the bunch.
After we got started we spent about a month getting to
know each other’s personalities and skills. Then, when we were an official
campus club, we got down to business. We learned two dances and perfected the
first down to a science (it looked as if we were one body) all in a matter of
two and a half months. We didn’t perform before Christmas break but when we
came back we were ready. Within the first month and a half on campus we
performed three times, once each the two dances learned before break. The last
was a whole new routine we had learned since then and performed with the
cheerleaders at courtwarming.
