Hey
everyone!
College is a short period in your
life where you have an opportunity to easily try new things and be involved in
projects you know nothing about. A few months ago, I would be shocked if I was
told I would be deeply involved in a collegiate theater production.
William Woods has an amazing theater team and is putting on 4 major productions this school year. The first was a musical homage to Broadway. I am NOT a singer, actor or dancer, the only theater experience I have was participating in musical theater summer camps in middle school. But my roommate and a few friends were auditioning, so I went for moral support and ended up signing up for a technical support position. They put me as Spotlight Operator #1, and I learned how to operate a huge spotlight! It was a bit difficult moving it around smoothly, keeping it the right size to accentuate the actors properly, and turning it on and off at precise moments in the play. But by the end of a month with lots of practice, I (and my fellow Spotlight Operator #2) was able to get the job done.

By
being involved and experiencing theater life, I was able to recognize all the
hard work from the performers, light crew, director, choreographer and music
director was necessary to put together an hour and a half performance. I was
not required to be at rehearsal every day, just the last 2 weeks, but everyone
else had to be at the theater for 3 hours, 5 days a week or more! So much time
and dedication were spent to entertain friends and strangers for a short period
of time.
Now
I can appreciate every theater production, the time spent on a project and the
people involved. So I encourage all of you to take advantage of being involved
in different organizations and projects, even if you have no idea what to do or
what it’s about! The people who know what they are doing are usually more than
willing to share their passion and educate any volunteers. I had so much fun
and met so many new people along the way! And if anyone needs a spotlight, I can
assist you with my new amazing spotlight skills :D
Is there any things you have tried that you never thought you would? let me know in the comments!
